Dries easily – The ideal running short should be able to dry easily. Some runners sweat around their legs, and begin to feel uncomfortable once the shorts cling to the skin because they are very wet from all the sweat. There is an amount of air that moves around the body and around the legs while running and this air, plus the right fabric, should be sufficient enough to keep the running shorts from becoming so wet that it becomes a cause of distraction for the runner.

Does not hamper leg movement - The ideal running short should enable the leg to move freely, unhampered by the restrictions of tightness around the legs. Discomfort caused by ill-designed running shorts distracts a runner who runs competitively. Those who run for leisure find the discomfort annoying, and it takes away the feeling of relaxing through running.

Pockets - The ideal running short should have at least a pocket or two somewhere so that a runner, especially leisurely runners, have compartments in which they can place some of the things they cannot leave behind, like keys or mp3 players.
