Joining the Running Team
The road is long and hard for boys and girls who want to pursue their dreams of becoming a member of the school’s varsity team or the prestigious national team for track and field. That is because becoming a member of an elite running team takes a lot of hard work, dedication, focus, skill and attitude.
Sure, you may be gifted with swift legs, and your relative may be one of the most prominent alumni of the school. It is easy for a person with a potential to become a member of the running team, but it is difficult and impossible to be successful if the person is not equipped mentally and emotionally to become a part of it.
Tryouts can be difficult, and the preparation months before the coach is due to make his or her selection can really sap out every ounce of energy left inside you. But the most difficult part is yet to begin, and it is better for you if you know some of the important lessons that can help keep your spot on the running team.
Work hard – To be able to gain your teammates’ and your coaches’ respect and approval, you must break a sweat as often as needed. Do not slack off. In the world of competitive sports, those who have the habit of slacking off either do not win or get the boot.
Assimilate – Socialize with your teammates up to a level that is healthy. Assimilation does not require over dependence on your peers and investing too much in the friendship. While the team is not created so you can have a new set of friends, it does not hurt anyone if you are able to get along and get comfortable with them to a certain degree. This can even make competing and winning that much more easy and achievable.
